The Original Tunnel View
Experience this signature view of Yosemite as an early 20th century visitor, from a location forgotten in time. Leave the crowds at Tunnel View behind and scramble up the mountain to catch of glimpse of Yosemite's past.
From its completion in 1875, the original Wawona Road was instrumental in connecting Yosemite Valley with the rest of the park and beyond. From the Wawona Hotel, stagecoaches would take 12 hours to reach Inspiration Point, overlooking the valley. Wawona Road was the way by which the first automobile entered the park in 1900, and how President Roosevelt reached Yosemite during his momentous visit in 1903. By the 1930s, the new Wawona Tunnel and Road were built, leaving Old Wawona Road to abandon. This hike crosses Old Wawona Road at about the half way point, where you can imagine tourists making their way a century ago.
